Fighting Back

Michael, row the boat ashore,

Hallelujah!

Then you’ll hear the trumpet blow

Hallelujah!

(Traditional spiritual)

During those terrible years, Pete Seeger did what he did best—took action and kept moving. In the 1950s he waged the most important battle of his life: fighting for his right to sing.

The Weavers tried to continue as a group; they presented a few more concerts. But Pete, now in his thirties, decided to leave the group and perform on his own. He went underground. He barnstormed across the country, playing in small colleges and churches, collecting supporters and fans. He carried his banjo to forty states and performed at hundreds of concerts, even though he might get only twenty-five dollars each time. He also went back to singing for children in schools and summer camps, as he had at the beginning of his career. He sang about brotherhood and sisterhood and included songs from around the world. Pete shared with his young listeners the idealistic belief in a world that could be made better by collective action.
